FROZEN SHOULDER

Physiotherapy for frozen shoulder focuses on restoring movement and reducing pain through gentle, regular exercises and assisted stretches, alongside manual therapy and education.

By starting early, the aim is to improve function over time. Treatment adapts to the shoulder's stage, progressing from pain relief to regaining range of motion with specific techniques like manual therapy and mobilisation with movement.

Expectations within stages:

  • Early Stages:

Focus on pain relief and gentle motion (pendulums, passive stretches).

  • Frozen Stage:

More intensive manual therapy, mobilization with movement (MWMs), and closed-chain stretches to restore range.

  • Thawing Stage:

Focus shifts to strengthening exercises, while continuing mobility work.

  • Timeline:

Recovery varies but typically takes months to years, with physiotherapy aiming to speed up the natural resolution.
